Definitely not true. I wish the image of nuns as compassionate and justice-seeking people would replace the old and idiotic image of nuns that still gets repeated. In her essay, Sister Jeannine notes that her initial entry into LGBT ministry back in was able to happen only because the sisters in her community guided and supported her:. They were readers, thinkers and women of action who tapped into needs that had been too long neglected by our church.

At that time, there was no discussion or awareness of transgender issues in the Catholic community. The Vatican lodged three requests for internal investigations, but all provincials and three General Superiors continued to support this new ministry. The support of nuns has also been evident in a variety of public actions, beyond the ministry that Sister Jeannine has conducted.

She recounts a number of strong examples:. The organization also publicly supported the right of same-sex couples to marry and spoke out against bullying of LGBT people.

Members of several congregations including the Eucharistic Missionaries of St. Joseph of Carondelet have companioned transgender people and their families on this sacred journey. Through a ministry of presence and accompaniment, the sisters have welcomed transgender folks into their lives and been welcomed in return.

Shortly thereafter the Sisters of St. Sisters have opened their motherhouses and retreat centers for LGBT programs. Many have signed petitions, demonstrated, or written letters of complaint when LGBT people are fired from Catholic institutions. Some have marched in solidarity in gay pride parades. Sisters have been part of the LGBT struggle in the past; they are their allies today.

And, as this conference made me so very aware, sisters give LGBT people much hope for the future. Women religious develop their ministerial agendas based on whom they encounter, and with whom the enter into dialogue. Zollman reflected on that moment:.

I thought of men and women whose passion for wholeness in relationship is lived in deep commitment to life-long same-sex partners. I heard deep in my own being, their struggle to find a home in our church.

Other church leaders can learn a lot from the wealth of experience that women religious have in welcoming LGBT people and witnessing for justice for them. Sister Jeannine points out in her essay that the nuns have been an important part of the history of the Catholic LGBT movement.

For all they have done, continue to do, and will do, a heartfelt thank you goes out to them all. Jeannine has been a steadfast friend to many Catholic lesbians and gays over the decades. Jeannine and New Ways Ministry provided invaluable support, comfort, consolation and hope to thousands of people over the years, and continue, along with Dignity, to be a prophetic voice globally in this ministry.

Thank God for you. This came about after a student posted a suicidal letter in the campus paper. The two pastors supported the sisters but did not feel they should become involved. I have no doubt that this saved lives. God bless the nuns!! I am a proud and grateful associate of the Sisters of St. Many in attendance are former Catholics, and still very religious. The sad and hurtful stories are continuing from Catholic and other denominations, while some are making inclusive and welcoming strides.

I thank all those women religious who have supported, and still do, all our LGBTQ sisters and brothers. We all need to be loved and celebrated just as we were created to be!

Not so easy Luis. If a priest and a sister had an affair it was always the sister who had to leave — especially if there was a pregnancy.

Coming out not so easy when female religious were dispensed of so easily. The Sisters of Mercy have supported me personally and financially in this amazing ministry for the past twenty years. Donna Ryan, RSM. Nuns have been at the forefront of every social justice movement. Thank you, sisters!! I have been praying for decades now for the story of our unsung and unknown Sisters who have been on the front lines of the gay rights movement in church but especially civil society be told.

So, so many stories. Many sisters in Australia were very quick to respond positively and compassionately to the devastating AIDS crisis. Women religious in OZ were for a good many years after Vat 2 on the forefront of change. This has waned somewhat as they have aged. However, the fact that their voices have always been strong on matters of pastoral care and loving all people irrespective of race, colour or creed ; is a testament for the need for women to have an equal voice and an equal authority in the Church.

I made a decision in that I would not attend mass due to the fact that it is painful not to be accept into the church that you grow up with and love so much.

The Untold Story of Nuns' Support of LGBT People - New Ways Ministry

The following post is an excerpt from the new book, If Nuns Ruled the World Open Road, September , which aims to shatter stereotypes about Catholic nuns. This chapter profiles Sister Jeannine Gramick, who has dedicated her life to fighting for the rights of gays and lesbians in the Catholic Church despite repeated censures from the Vatican for her activities. How could Sister Jeannine Gramick have known that meeting a handsome gay stranger named Dominic at a house party on Spruce Street in West Philadelphia would completely change the course of her life?

Dominic strode up to her. He was a baptized gay man who had left the Catholic Church because a priest told him that he was going to hell. He wasn't alone. Most of his circle of gay friends hadn't set foot in a church for years for the same reason.

Dominic's story made the young nun squirm. She knew there was a profound stigma against homosexuality, especially in conservative Philadelphia, but she despised the idea that the Church would exclude anyone for something so inconsequential. Dominic asked Sister Jeannine if she would be willing to host a home liturgy for him and his buddies, telling her he missed his faith and the Church.

Anxious to help, to do something to heal his wounds, she agreed. We made them feel very loved," Sister Jeannine said. That was the beginning of Sister Jeannine's fight for equality for gays and lesbians within the Catholic Church.

Since she has been running New Ways, an organization that fights for equal rights. It wasn't even a thing. People were anxious about any sexual issues, much less homosexual ones. Those superiors were women of vision.

They stood by me. Sister Jeannine's fight was about exclusion. It was about civil rights. She wanted to flip the script and pivot from a focus on sexual ethics to a narrative about social justice. They are denied basic human dignity," Sister Jeannine told me with an angry tinge to her voice.

She added with a chuckle, "If we were going to fire every person whose life is not in line with the sexual ethics of the Church, we wouldn't have many people in the Catholic institution.

She recounted a story to me about an older nun who had no idea what it meant to be a homosexual or what "New Ways" was all about. The elderly sister was in the dark about what Sister Jeannine even did with "those people," and why they needed their own special ministry in the first place. Sister Jeannine patiently explained the basics of homo-sexuality. The older nun just shook her head. Sister Jeannine's mission was to educate Catholics that their gay and lesbian brothers and sisters were just like them.

On most days, Sister Jeannine wakes in the morning delighted to go to work. Somehow she has managed to remain delighted in the face of serious oppression from within the Church. Working with the gay community has made her a target of the male bishops who would like to see her ministry eradicated completely.

Sister Jeannine's community had her back. Each time they got a letter, her fellow sisters responded to the Vatican that she was simply doing the work of the Church and recommended that she not be sanctioned. It was a more polite way of saying "Mind your own business. Cardinal Hickey's continued letters had their intended effect. In early , the Vatican convened a three-member US-based committee headed by Bishop Adam Joseph Maida, the archbishop of Detroit, to render an official judgment on Sister Jeannine's gay ministry.

Her community stood strong in support of her and her work, but they could not go against the Vatican's final decree. Sister Jeannine didn't want to cause them needless pain or to draw more of the Vatican's ire toward them, so she left them and moved to a new order -- the Sisters of Loretto,.

Being an outcast of the Church hierarchy has helped Sister Jeannine relate even more to the people she serves. There is a button stuck on a bulletin board in Sister Jeannine's house that reads: "We shall not be silenced. I support Jeannine Gramick. The Vatican tried to silence me and it just didn't work.
