This Is Exercise, Not Striptease: Who Would Participate in Striptease Aerobics? | Psychology Today
Verified by Psychology Today. Fit Femininity. In her research, Magdalena Petersson McIntyre explores the popularity of strip tease aerobics in Sweden. The Swedish fitness practice of strip tease aerobics, says Petersson, was inspired by exercise videos originally sold on the Internet by Hollywood celebrity Carmen Electra.
Curiously, the first fitness club to offer strip tease aerobics in Sweden was owned by the current Prince Daniel who married the crown princess Victoria of Sweden last year. To further understand the popularity of this type of exercise, Pettersson interviewed three women instructors in different Swedish fitness centers about what made them excited about strip tease aerobics.
The instructors felt that strip tease aerobics was inherently a feminine exercise form. What made it feminine was its sexiness and this sexiness made it fun, more fun than other exercise forms, such as weight training, that they found were originally designed for men. These instructors believed that women need more complex exercise practices than men so they do not get bored.
They also claimed that 'letting loose' in a strip tease aerobics class made the participants feel good about their bodies. Strip tease aerobics, for one instructor, was like being in a MTV video - dancing in a coolest club, to great music, feeling gorgeous. But to create this sensation, the sexiness had to be controlled.
To do this, the Swedish classes were a modified form of the original, American strip tease aerobics. All the instructors required that their participants keep their clothes on. One instructor even recommended loose clothing because it was more comfortable to perform strip tease moves in this type of exercise wear than the form fitting, revealing, 'usual' aerobics gear.
Most of the sexiness was to come through the facial expression, fancy hair style, and heavier than usual make-up. The instructors, nevertheless, often faced questions about women's sexual exploitation when teaching such classes.
They defended their chosen exercise form by emphasizing that participants, indeed, kept their clothes on. In addition, the exercisers did not perform for men, but rather for themselves. The participants were actively encouraged to focus only on their own performance and the enjoyment of 'letting loose' while getting a work out in a 'safe' and respectable setting.
The instructors also believed that strip tease aerobics allowed women to challenge the cultural expectations of feminine sexuality by being able to transform movements usually connected to strip clubs to a conventional exercise setting and making it fun for 'normal' women. Strip tease aerobics was, then, distanced from 'real' strip tease as much as possible.
The instructors definitely denied promoting any ideas connected to the sex industry. This was a fun exercise form. It provided a good work out. It made women feel good about their bodies. It made 'average' women feel sexy. But was this all good? Is it possible to erase all the connection to women's sexual exploitation just by changing the location, the clientele, the apparel and modifying some of the moves?
Petersson concludes that on one hand, while the instructors advocated strip tease aerobics promoting an acceptable, new femininity, the objectifying connection to sex industry could not entirely be erased.
In addition, the femininity promoted in these classes, according to Petersson, was along the lines of socially acceptable feminine ideal heterosexual, fit, sexy, attractive similar to many other commercial fitness classes. For example, the fitness industry can sell fitness classes such as the strip tease aerobics as 'new' empowering work outs although they actually promote rather conventional 'femininity' through such ideas as sexiness and sex appeal.
On the other hand, Petersson asserts that in this cultural context, strip tease aerobics has provided the Swedish women a space to openly deal with the contradictions connected to women's oppressive sex work and women's empowerment through the stronger, more confident exercising body.
So, do we need strip tease aerobics when we have so many other exercise forms? Obviously, the Swedish classes were popular, says Petersson, and they were good workouts without stripping. But does women's exercise need to be connected to sex and sexuality?
If not, what should exercise be about? Hopefully, we can continue to explore possible answers to these questions in upcoming blogs. I find it odd that I am agreeing with the more "hardcore" feminists here. I cannot help but roll my eyes when women tell how empowering it is when they strip or take pole dance lessons.
These are almost always the same women making out with a female friend at a bar to gain male attention. In a way they are right, we men have no right to tell them how they can express themselves What I would really love to see on a Psychology blog is an explanation of why anybody still retains these silly, antiquated and anti-sexuality notions in this day and age.
Why should women feel they have to defend themselves against wanting to feel sexy? Sexuality is human and normal. Sex is a pleasurable act in itself, and all the rituals around it: flirtation, seduction, courtship, exhibitionism, etc are intrinsically fun and fulfilling. We all like to be desired, and every woman has a right- indeed an obligation- to revel in her own sexuality. I take great comfort from the fact that the 'exploitative' sex and porn industries are showing zero sign of declining, beauty pageants are as popular as ever, strip clubs are booming, and attractive women still love to show off their bodies in bikinis and form-fitting clothes.
