I will travel to Tortola for a couple of days in October, is there any gay bar or place to go? There are no "gay" bars in the BVI.
The BVI people are very religious Christian and conservative. No nude or topless beaches either. Plenty of bars and nightlife on Tortola , just not gay bars. If you are coming here in the first part of October, it will still be pretty quiet here with the exception of the Interline Regatta. If you run into this group, they are about fun loving airline personnel pilots, flight attendants, etc.
Like the above poster said, the belongers are very religious and conservative people. Not that there would be obvious discrimination against gays, I just don't think the people would be openly accepting of gays, either. You know - don't ask, don't tell. Lots of churches and entire islands close down for weddings and funerals of residents had this happen on Jost Van Dyke.
I may be wrong, but I just don't see gays being accepted at this point in time. I will be in Tortola and area Islands sailing fro the 19th - 30th of Oct When are you going to be in Tortola? I will get in late on the 19th and be sailing around the Islands. Would like to meet up with another gay guy or guys.
There are no gay bars, beaches, or hangouts in the BVI. I would be careful about public displays of affection not only straight, but especially gay. If you are in public holding hands or kissing, you might hear some pretty derogatory comments from any locals in the area, like "anti-man" or other local slang for gay people.
People in the BVI don't care about what you do in private, but you could make yourself vulnerable by being affectionate in public. That being said, you will find more open attitudes on the outlying islands like Jost Van Dyke , Virgin Gorda , and Anegada , where the people are generally friendlier and more laid back.
I would be more careful on Tortola and not be too open about your sexuality. It's nice to hanging out with you guys with my gay guy friend. Yank is right, Tortola is quiet conservative and not really open with regards to this one. Some other gay vacationers head for Frederiksted, in St. Croix USVI which has more hotels and other establishments catering to the gay market.
Variant Styles of Homosexual Behavior LGBT natives are of course everywhere in the Caribbean and their particular personal situations vary a lot according to their family, religious and political circumstances, as well as the level of homophobia in their state. These people form the core of the modern gay-rights movement. Many of these are out and accepted by their friends and family.
Others are quietly known and are left alone, others are harassed and bullied and occasionally injured, still others with strong self-confidence are amused and talk back to their offenders.
And, perhaps sadly and most commonly, LGBT people who fear coming out are compelled into marriage—with kids—in order to fit in and avoid suspicion. There are various degrees of bi-sexual desire, with many of these people married willingly or unwillingly to the opposite gender. Some of these are captive sex-slaves mostly heterosexual females abducted from their homes and forced into the trade while many others are not slaves but are attracted by the money from paying clients including tourists.
Although undocumented, women can also engage with other women. Once a deep secret in the closet and underground, in recent years this has become widely known in the gay community—and among women and spouses. These folks are virtually invisible and very private. Two significant forces help create this behavior. First are the numerous Christian churches, most of which are branches of anti-gay mainland denominations that preach against the sin of homosexuality, indeed any sex outside of marriage.
See this sad report. The status of local LGBT people is one of living discreetly to avoid the stigma deriving from cultural, religious, and social taboos and beliefs. Ironically, the long standing tradition of crimalizing homosexual behavior was initiated by the British now a leader in gay-lib when many Caribbean islands were forced into becoming colonies of the once-great Empire. The historic prejudice against homosexuality in the African cultures was imported to the Caribbean with slavery in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Slavery was outlawed around in BVI. I lack friends who can truly understand me. It can only be discovered by behavior, most of which occurs out of public view. So most visitors go home with favorable memories, photos and a sun tan. For a considerably higher budget there is even a gay-friendly yacht renting service. The BVI are numerous but small in size and population so no official gay scene or organization exists. As with with other Caribbean islands being in close proximity to the US allows for many gay and lesbian visitors to easily come and go but virtually none settle in sufficiently enough in numbers to form a cohesive community with activists and a rights agenda.
Not surprisingly, native Afro-Caribbean gays, mostly closeted, would be very hesitant to join any organization headed by white folks and even more reluctant to risk being out too far in their society. The tiny island of Saba is known mostly for its diving, hiking, and other outdoor activities, but is quickly gaining a reputation as a bastion of tolerance in the Caribbean, too. With its laissez-faire French culture and a myriad of private villas to choose from, St. Barts is has been called the most gay-friendly island in the Caribbean.
This is the place to get lost in the Caribbean for a few days, far from the cruise-ship crowds. By any measure, with its mix of celebrities, yachties, high-end shopping, and vibrant nightlife, St. Barts is fabulous. Both Dutch St. Maarten and French St. Martin have long had a gay-friendly reputation, with many private villas for rent and beaches and bars where gay and straight couples peacefully coexist. Maarten's reputation was sullied somewhat by a incident where a gay couple was assaulted near a popular beach bar, but island tourism officials were quick to apologize, and the island remains near the top of the list for many gay Caribbean travelers.
Clothing-optional beaches and resorts on the French side of the island earn bonus points. Same-sex marriage is legal here. Gay travelers in Puerto Rico will find the Caribbean's only real gay nightlife scene: San Juan highlights include the Atlantic Beach Hotel and Bar set on a gay beach and with a weekly drag show and clubs like Eros.
On both the mainland and the island of Vieques you can find gay-friendly resorts, and gay travelers in Puerto Rico have the benefit of protection by U. Supreme Court ruling legalizing same-sex marriage. The U. Croix, in particular, has become a mecca for gay travelers, many of whom wind up at the welcoming Sand Castle on the Beach Resort in Frederiksted.
Gay travelers can expect a friendly and tolerant attitude throughout the U.

I don't know of any strickly gay clubs on St. There are no strickly anything clubs here for the most part - everyone pretty much goes to the same places. There are some special "parties" that are hosted at various clubs by an association - not sure where you get details on where and when though. Gay friendly accomodations on St. On St. Thomas if you are coming with a partner and want privacy you could try Pools and Pavillions.
I'm from New Orleans and here we have gay clubs everywhere and so many gay couples live here that it's become a way of live that almost everyone accepts here. That is just the opposite there. I'm not a homosexual but you are probably going to have a very hard time finding similar interests there.
Your only option probably would be seclusion there. If you want to have fun and be yourself, trust come to New Orleans for Carnival! The beach is beautiful. Very friendly, excellent service and nice people. The rooms are, ahem, a bit theadbare. If you're looking for the Ritz Carlton, this is not it. If you're looking for fantastic views, loads of nice people, a hopping bar scene and a good restaurant, then you've found it.
Smaller than the Cormorant, but very nice. Haven't seen the rooms, but the outdoor cafe is excellent, the beach is superb, and the pool is active. Nice people, Fredricksted location.
I disagree with Fred's assumption that the islands are not gay-friendly. Here on St. Croix nightlife of every type is a little limited or I haven't found the right places! From everything I've seen, gay couples here are treated fine. ME TOO I disagree gays are welcome my best friend is gay I'm not but they are great people they are trusting people to me carefree very helpful and so much fun to be around I never heard of anyone not being welcome or treated badly so come on down and enjoy.
I too disagree. Thomas has so many gays people hardly bat an eye at them! There is a new piano bar on Main Street that seems to be the headquarters at this time. It's called Tommy's.
